청명절 어느 춥고 바람 부는 아침, 어린 소년이 풀밭에 앉아 가족들이 향로에 향종이를 넣는 모습을 지켜보고 있었다. 오늘은 너무 일찍 깨서 기분이 몹시 언짢았고, 준비를 돕고 싶지 않았다.
아이의 짜증스러운 표정을 본 어머니는 다가가 아이 옆에 섰다. 가족들이 향로에 마지막 향지를 넣고 불을 붙이려는 모습을 지켜보던 아이는 투덜거렸다. "도대체 이 축제는 왜 있는 거예요? 하필 이 날에 향을 피우는 게 무슨 의미가 있어요?"
이 말을 듣고 소년의 어머니는 부드럽게 미소 지었다. "청명절은 조상님께 향을 피우며 제사를 지내는 날이란다! 종이처럼 생긴 향을 피우면 저승에서 조상님께 돈이 풍족하게 전해져 마음껏 쓰실 수 있다는 믿음이 있단다!"

(The Legend of the Mysterious Qingming Festival Dragon)
On one cold windy morning during the Qingming Festival, a little boy was sitting in a grass field, watching his family put incense paper into a furnace. He had been woken up very early today, thus he was quite grumpy about it and was not in the mood to help set up.
Seeing the boy’s annoyed expression, his mother approached and joined him. As they watched their family put in the last of the incense paper into the furnace and started to try lighting it up, the little boy grumbled, “Why do we even have this festival anyways? What’s the point of burning incense paper on this specific day?”
Hearing this, the boy’s mother smiled softly. “Well, the Qingming Festival is a day where we honor our ancestors by burning incense paper for them! There is a belief that by burning incense paper such as paper money, it will be delivered to our ancestors in the afterlife and makes sure they have sufficient money to spend!”
The little boy’s eyes sparkled. “Oh, that sounds really cool! But how does the incense paper we burn reach our ancestors?” Looking up at ashes rising into the sky as the furnace starts burning a bright red, the boy’s mother replied, “There is a legend of a mysterious dragon that will travel between the real world and the afterlife to carry the incense paper to our ancestors. If you are lucky enough, you may see the dragon rising up from the furnace!”
“Wow… that’s amazing!! That dragon must be very tired, having to carry goods to and from realms! Hmm… I wonder if I can do something to cheer it up… oh, I know!” The little boy suddenly stood up, and ran towards his house. A moment later, he returned with a piece of colourful incense paper in his hand. Excitedly, he started folding the paper into the shape of a lotus flower. “I’m going to put this paper flower into the furnace as a gift to the dragon! I bet this will keep it happy!!” He grinned.
After folding the paper into a pretty lotus flower, he dropped it into the furnace, and watched the paper’s colour slowly darken as it slowly burned up. As the boy looked at the ashes rising towards the sky, he saw a glimpse of a majestic dragon soaring into the sky, and there seemed to be a lotus flower on its face. Smiling, the boy waved towards the sky. “Thank you dragon for your hard work~”
