혼령들이 주변을 떠도는 구름 같은 털과 붉고 하얀 끈을 두른 알이다. 알은 가만히 내버려 두면 좋은 기운이 흐르는 곳으로 굴러가곤 한다. 
밝고 따뜻한 곳을 좋아하며, 오래된 신사에서 가장 잘 부화하지만, 어둠의 기운이 강한 곳에서는 쉽게 부화하지 못한다.

암컷 타이코가 혼령들을 달래면, 수컷 타이코가 꼬리의 방울로 그들을 인도한다고 전해진다. 인간들의 축제를 좋아해,
축제가 열리는 곳에 가끔 나타나 축복을 내리기도 한다.

각자의 역할에 충실하며, 모든 일이 끝나면 자신이 부화한 신사로 돌아가 잠든다.
타이코가 방황하는 혼들을 전부 거두면 그 마을에서는 기분 좋은 방울 소리와 함께 포근한 구름이 뜬다고 한다.

태고의 퇴마사

어느 옛날부터, 동방에서는 

원한을 풀지 못하고 

죽은 존재들은 악령이 되어 

세상을 원망하고 재앙을 일으키곤 했다.
이를 가만 두고 볼 수 없었던 동방의 어느 신은,

신사의 입구를 지키던 용 모양 나무 동상에게 

생명과 이름을 불어넣으며 저들을 인도하라는 임무를 부여했다.

“타이코, 너는 저 불쌍한 혼들을 거두어 승천시키는 막중한 임무를 맡아 괴로워하는 이들을 도와주거라.”
타이코들은 조용히 고개를 끄덕이더니 이내 날아올라 하나는 하늘 위로, 하나는 땅으로 향했다.

붉은 타이코가 땅을 보고 울부짖자 악령들의 사악한 마음은 하나 둘 정화되기 시작했다.

 순수한 혼령이 된 이들은 타이코의 옥구슬 근처를 맴돌다가, 하늘로 올라갔다.
하늘에 있던 하얀 타이코는 그들을 천천히 달래어 승천의 관문까지 데려다 주었다.

 그렇게 타이코가 땅을 수호하게 되자 악령들은 점차 사라졌고, 
아직까지도 타이코가 이 땅을 축복하길 바라며 인간들은 축제와 제사를 지낸다고 한다.

The taiko nodded quietly and soon flew up, one headed up to the sky and the other to the ground.

As the red Taiko cried at the ground, the evil minds of the demons began to be purified one by one.

Those who became pure spirits hovered near Taiko's jade bead and went up to the sky.
The white taiko in the sky slowly soothed them to the gates of ascension

When Taiko defended the land, the demons gradually disappeared, 
It is said that humans still hold festivals and rituals, hoping that Taiko will bless the land.
