Said to be an after effect of electronic viruses, the Data egg can sense electronic devices nearby and feeds off its battery, which can actively be seen when the plasma on top grows stronger.

Hatch

Young Data dragons are timid and easily frightened. When scared or angered, their plasma wings and mane grow brighter, and they often hide their vibrant tails under their belly. While they can eat regular food, the Data Dragon always has a preference for feeding off of battery power from electronics. They tend to dislike solar powered battery, though.

Hatchling

As a Data Dragon grows up, they grow braver and more daring. Their purple coloration on their wings and ears turn pink and black like their tails as they grow up, and they can do even more potential damage to electronic devices. An electronic's screen displaying colors of pink and black is the telltale sign of a Data Dragon tampering with the device or feeding off the battery. This behavior can be stopped though, as trained Data dragons can learn to leave electronics alone.

Adult

Fully grown Data dragons are capable of making electronics go haywire. They're cunning and smart, and the stronger ones are capable of even entering devices for short amounts of time. When agitated, their electronic sounding roars can quickly power off all devices in the area, and when rebooted, those devices often have some of their data wiped. However, Data dragons are on the more peaceful side, and if trained well, can even be trained to find and remove viruses and malware from electronics.
