Hi, I am SacachiDragon from the North American (NA) server. I am submitting my dragon (Ephallem) for Dragon Village Collection’s 4th Creator Dragon contest! I can only speak in English and had to use an online translator so apologies in advance if the Korean translations are inaccurate or confusing. I have been working on Ephallem for a while (since after the end of the last contest), and so I can’t wait to finally share them with the world!

I was heavily inspired by Girdletail and Crested with how tamers can obtain their various forms in-game. The idea behind Ephallem is that it would change form when bred with a dragon who has a different element than it. For example, if Ephallem is bred with a Lightning dragon, the Ephallem child will hatch as its lightning element form. My goal with Ephallem’s design was to create a dragon that felt both cute and cool to look at, while also mixing up some eastern and western dragon body types. I planned to make the sprites and illustrations for all of Ephallem’s different forms (for each stage of growth), but decided I already spent too much time on this project. So anyway, without further ado, here is my dragon Ephallem!

저는 거들테일과 크레스티드에서 게임 내에서 테이머가 다양한 형태를 얻을 수 있는 방법에 많은 영감을 받았습니다. 에팔렘은 자신과 다른 원소를 가진 드래곤과 함께 사육하면 형태가 변한다는 아이디어가 떠올랐어요. 예를 들어, 에팔렘을 번개 드래곤과 함께 키우면 에팔렘의 새끼는 번개 원소 형태로 부화합니다. 에팔렘의 디자인 목표는 동양과 서양의 드래곤 체형을 섞어 귀여우면서도 멋진 느낌을 주는 드래곤을 만드는 것이었습니다. 에팔렘의 다양한 형태(성장 단계별로)에 맞는 스프라이트와 일러스트를 모두 만들 계획이었지만 이미 이 프로젝트에 너무 많은 시간을 소비했다고 판단했습니다. 그래서 더 이상 고민하지 않고 여기 제 드래곤 에팔렘이 있습니다!

Egg / 달걀

“An orb floats around this egg‘s metal shell.”

[Translation]

"달걀의 금속 껍질 주위에 구슬이 떠 있습니다."

Wherever the egg is taken, the diamond-like orb floating by it will follow. If there is a potential threat nearby, the orb will discharge energy and furiously spin around the egg to protect it. The orb never rests and constantly changes colors depending on its surrounding environment, although it will often glow a dull purple-pink. If the orb is somehow cracked, the egg’s metal sheen will corrode and the orb will lay lifelessly on the ground without color. Many say they have observed the egg absorbing the elemental magic around it into its metal shell as it matures. Once it hatches, energy will leak out and glow through its shell with the same color as its orb. Similar to an interlocking puzzle, the shell will shift until Ephallem feels comfortable in its hatch form.

Ephallem hatches have a tendency to be highly curious and unafraid of the unknown. However, this often gets them into trouble. They will only listen to their tamer when they are helping to satisfy their curiosity. Yet, because they constantly change from one topic to the next, it is almost impossible to grab their attention. So they will often run headlong into danger unless they have personally learned that it is a threat. Although Ephallem tend to be individualistic, there are many times where they will gather with their own kind or other dragons to play with and study them. Usually Ephallem can be seen rolling around and wrestling playfully with their orb as they try to analyze it. Sometimes they will even show frustration towards their orb as it constantly follows and distracts them. Ephallem hatches seem to be unaware that they are absorbing the magical energy around them and their orb is tied to their lifeforce. Although a hatch’s orb still shifts in color, it will often stay with a particular color based on the elemental magic it absorbed as an egg. An observant tamer will be able to know how an Ephallem is feeling by studying the patterns and intensity of their orb’s glow.

As Ephallem mature, their orb settles on a color that reflects the type of elemental magic they will have for the rest of their life. Now aware that their orb is tied to their lifeforce, hatchlings have a tendency to be protective of it. This leads to them feeling cautious towards unknown situations and organizing strategic ways of finding answers to their interests. Which often causes them to act more mischievous and sly. Hatchlings are also highly aware of the magical energy their body constantly absorbs and feeds off of. The energy their body has gathered since they were an egg makes them feel uncomfortable and high strung. However, rather than expel this energy through play or duel with other dragons, they store it by forming rings of condensed magic around their tail. These rings are then used when the hatchling feels cornered or wants to fly. When expelling energy to fly, an Ephallem’s fur will glisten as they form a pair of small wings on their back. Although it is solely their magic that propels Ephallem through the sky, they find great joy in creating wings. Hatchlings will often spend hours fiddling with their wings to create a unique shape without wasting too much energy. Aside from storing and expelling magic, an Ephallem’s tail rings are also used as good indicators of its health. If the rings are thin, nonexistent, too thick, or too numerous, then the hatchling is struggling to manage their magical energy due to either extreme stress or over pampering. Thus, due to the nature of Ephallems’ rings and orb, they are naturally very physically and emotionally transparent to others.

“Now fully grown, its past experiences are reflected as abstract magical markings swirling through its armor. Its magically formed wings never dissipate, even when pushing itself too far to study its own elemental advantages and weaknesses.

With its elemental magic fully developed, it bolsters a new found balance of self-confidence, wisdom, and power. Although it still searches to expand its knowledge on the world, it now shares its found wisdom with other dragons and its tamer. Seeking to help those around it find their own inner confidence and adapt to any problem that may cross their path. When it feels its end is near, it will find a quiet spot overlooking its most favorite place. Then it will release the magic it has absorbed all its life back into the environment. Leaving behind only its metal shell and empty orb as the remains.”

Ephallem are simply bursting with magical energy once they reach adulthood. How they utilize their energy varies heavily on which method of analysis they prefer. Some go with action first, usually challenging other dragons to further develop their knowledge on elemental magic. Others seek to observe first and keep their conversations and experiences with dragons and tamers as abstract notes on their armor. Adult Ephallem feel very in-tune with themselves and their magic, and thus feel a need to not only gather but also share the knowledge they have with those close to them. Hoping to inspire and help others find their own path towards creativity and self-confidence. Despite the occasional trouble they cause, Ephallem remain loyal to their tamers and are sometimes dismissive towards other humans who didn’t help raise them. When an Ephallem rests their orb next to someone, it is a sign that they completely trust that being and would do anything to protect them. It is considered taboo to touch Ephallem’s orb or rings without their permission, and they will become quite aggressive towards those who do not respect their personal boundaries.

Historians say that in every 1,000 years the Ephallem will have a new form, but will always retain their orb and metal armor. It has also been observed that the Ephallem population has remained consistent throughout the years, despite any major world event. This has caused tamers to theorize that the Ephallem are reincarnating and seek to rebuild their ancestors’ city in the sky using all the knowledge and magic they absorb during their lifetimes. Hoping to someday find a way to break the curse plaguing their species. Although these theories aren’t proven, the Ephallem love to entertain their tamer’s inquiries by being as sly as they can be when questioned about their motives and goals.
