Moontail hunter

This egg bears an image of a crescent moon.
It is a dark egg featuring a crescent moon on its side, colored like an unlit lamp. The egg can sense others of its kind nearby; if one of them lights up its tail, the crescent moon on the egg begins to glow as well.

This hatch's tail is larger than its body.
Even though the tail is bigger than the hatch itself, it does not hinder movement, and the little one maneuvers it with ease. The hatch can already make its tail glow, though it does not yet know how to hunt. It often climbs onto its tail and sleeps there. Parents sometimes take their hatches along on hunts, during which the little ones run along their parents' tails.

This hatchling loves cloudy weather.
It begins learning to hunt on cloudy nights. It has superior control over the glow of its tail, able to illuminate only specific sections to create various patterns or even animations. Because its tail is small, it mimics stars-or a shooting star-rather than the crescent moon, darting at high speed over its hunting grounds. It already possesses incredibly keen eyesight, allowing it to see for many kilometers in every direction. When it spots prey, it extinguishes its tail and flies toward the target at incredible speed.

This is a dark dragon that pretends to be the crescent moon at night, using its glowing tail to hunt.
Despite its dark coloration, this dragon can still be spotted by creatures with night vision; to counter this, the moontail hunter causes its tail to glow with such blinding intensity that no other dragon can look at it, allowing the hunter to remain unseen. It can hover in one spot for hours scanning for prey, then hide in the clouds before diving down upon an unsuspecting animal. The moontail hunter is incredibly strong-capable of carrying another adult hunter while airborne-and is a very fast flyer. Thanks to its eagle-like vision, it can clearly see the ground below even from high in the sky.
Although many other dragons dislike the hunter because of his diet, he is kind and readily willing to help those in need.
(Description of an adult in the Dagon Book)
The moontail hunter mimics the moon on cloudy nights, blinding everyone with the brilliant glow of its tail. The dragon’s own eyes can withstand this intense light, allowing it to see clearly even with its tail positioned right next to its face. When the dark dragon spots prey, it slowly dims its tail - as if the moon were slipping back behind the clouds - then quickly ascends above the cloud cover to remain unseen; from there, it gains momentum and dives at incredible speed, striking the prey before it can even be spotted. The moontail hunter can go weeks without eating - suffering no ill effects - while waiting for a cloudy night.
Story
The Kind Villain
A small, exhausted dragon was walking slowly through the forest at night.
"How did I end up here? I thought I was on the right path! And how am I supposed to get home now?.."
Clouds had blanketed the sky, making it impossible to navigate by the stars. But worse still, after the moon vanished, a new one appeared - shining with an intense brilliance. The little dragon already knew what it was.
"The moontail hunter! I’m too tired to outrun him; he might catch me!"
The little dragon quickly found a hiding spot and watched the hunter in fear. The dark dragon began to slowly dim his tail, then started to descend toward the little dragon.
"Don't worry, little dragon; I'm not hunting you. I saw that you were exhausted and bewildered. I want to help you."
The moontail hunter settled the little dragon onto his back and took flight at incredible speed. In a short time, they covered a vast distance, and the dragon was able to reach his home.
"Thank you, hunter! To be honest, I didn't think you would help me."
"I couldn't bear to watch you struggle to get home all night while so tired. I don't want anyone to feel bad..."
Just then, the moontail hunter felt an unpleasant sensation in his stomach. He was hungry.
"But I don't want to feel bad either - I have to hunt."
The dark dragon soared into the sky and flew back at great speed, scanning the forests for potential prey.
