Wild Enigmatic Dragons are strictly nocturnal, and vanish without a trace when spotted, making photos and reports unreliable. In fact, it was considered a mere cryptid for ages. There are many scary stories and rumors regarding Enigmatic Dragons.

Egg

You almost missed this egg while you were taking a midnight stroll through the forest. The dark colors and black mist around the egg makes it camouflage so well in the darkness. Only when you caught the subtle sparkle of moonlight reflecting off of the egg’s silver necklace, did you notice it.  

Hatch

This hatch is found to be very shy; at least with unfamiliar tamers. Whenever there are other tamers around, the little dragon often runs to hide behind you. Although, it seems to be a lot more social with other dragons, and is often seen playing with your other hatches. 

Hatchling

Even despite how much it seems to trust you, it never lets you see the rest of its face. You’ve tried to gently move its hood or head wings, but it often swats your hand away or hisses at you. You eventually gave up on trying to see the rest of its face. 

Adult

Despite the eerie appearance of the Enigmatic Dragon, tamers who have raised one from an egg have discovered it’s actually quite friendly. It appears to be shy but curious around tamers that didn't raise it, which explains why it would often be spotted watching tamers in the wild before disappearing. It's also often seen helping care for the other eggs its tamer has taken in, warming the eggs with its many wings. 

Though the dragon shows a kind and gentle nature, tamers warn to never try to force an Enigmatic Dragon to show its face. It appears to get annoyed if a tamer tries to move its hood or head wings away from its face, even starting to growl if the tamer is too persistent. Because of this, rumors claim that looking into an Enigmatic Dragon's eyes will guarantee death. 

Story

What was that?

It was a dark, moonless night in the early days of fall. A small camp was settled in the clearing of a dark, peaceful forest. The tamers were gathered around, telling each other stories and rumors of ghosts that haunted the forest, wanting to see who could scare the others the most.

“They say,” One of the campers began. “If you wander a dark space and see many glowing blue eyes in the corner of your own eye, you must immediately look to the ground. You must not look in the direction of the eyes, and wait for the creature to leave. Otherwise, the creature will become enraged and-” The camper goes silent to make a threatening gesture. 

“…Is it at least a quick death?” One of the other tamers would ask.

“No one knows. After all, nobody’s lived to tell the tale!” The teller of the story would laugh at their own dark joke.  

“That was a terrible joke.”

All of the sudden, two of the other campers would cry, pointing in the same direction, “What is that?!” 

The rest of the tamers look in the direction the two were pointing in, seeing a dark, eerie creature standing there. It was standing, motionless, and seeming to be staring at them. It was difficult to make out the appearance of the beast, as it blended in so seamlessly with the darkness, but it was clear that the dragon’s eyes were either hidden or didn't exist. 

For a long moment, the group of tamers and the creature were locked in silent stare-down. But sooner or later, the tamers had to blink. The moment their eyes were no longer on the dragon, it completely vanished, leaving no trace behind. Not even footprints were there to indicate the presence of any creatures. 

Was this unsettling encounter that of a spirit? Was it some kind of shared hallucination among all of the tamers? Was all of this just a dream? Or was it something entirely different that not even they, as dragon tamers, knew about?
